An evolution of trends and expectations within healthcare has changed the requirements of today's operating rooms and other areas demanding superior levels of hygiene, infection control, patient safety and efficiency.

It is essential that surfaces are safe, hygienic and easy to clean. Maintaining an aseptic environment requires surfaces which are resistant to most chemicals and staining and are completely cleanable. Another consideration is durability; impact resistance to heavy traffic is vital as moving trolleys and other mobile equipment is a constant requirement in this environment.

Hybrids need to be larger than traditional operating rooms due to their wider role, housing more and often heavier equipment. there is also increased foot and wheeled traffic, with less down-time. This makes maintaining a hygienic environment challenging while at the same time increasing the importance of doing so.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), hundreds of millions of patients are affected by healthcare- associated infections globally, with seven per cent of patients in developed countries acquiring at least one. In high-income countries, approximately 30% of patients in intensive care units are affected by at least one healthcare-associated infection. This results in risk to the patient, increased hospital stays and financial losses for health systems.

Hand hygiene is key in reducing the risk of infections such as meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureusis (MRSA); therefore the environment that patients and staff come into contact with must be hygienic. The constant movement of patients means that hospitals are a potential breeding ground for bacteria, which is evolving to become more resilient to antibiotics, increasing the need for wall protection that is hygienic and easy to clean. Altro Whiterock has been tested in accordance with ISO 22196, which shows that MRSA will not survive on its surface.

The American Institute of Architects recommends that floor and wall finishes should be free of fissures, open joints or crevices that may retain or permit the passage of dirt and particles. These areas can retain moisture and provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria are roughly 80-90% water and require moisture to obtain nutrients and grow. Installing Altro Whiterock, an impervious, fully bonded wall sheet, ensures that minimal moisture is present.

Altro Whiterock’s internal and external angles are thermoformed on site, avoiding the need for unsightly corner trims which are potential dirt traps and difficult to clean. Thermoformed corners and angles provide a much more hygienic surface than the grouted joints associated with tiles, which require an aggressive cleaning regime. Thermoformed corners maintain the same level of impact resistance as the standard product, which is particularly important as corners tend to receive most knocks.

We have designed a fully integrated system to make cleaning and maintenance easier for you. Together Altro safety flooring and Altro Whiterock create a watertight and fully sealed environment giving bacteria nowhere to hide. As the system is fully integrated, it fits together perfectly to provide a hygienic, watertight solution. No gaps or rough edges, just a smooth, uninterrupted surface – even around plug sockets, light switches and corners.

Altro- The Commercial Kitchen Experts

From the time a kitchen assistant walks through the 'goods in' with the food delivery, until they leave at the end of their shift, they are walking throughout the kitchen and coming into contact with contaminants and slip hazards.

Altro Stronghold 30/K30 achieves Altro's highest rating for slip resistance (TRRL>55, R12, P5). Tests prove it minimises risk in wet and greasy conditions. As well as helping to keep staff safe from slips, it also helps reduce their fatigue, thanks to its 3mm thickness which provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot. Because of its thickness, it is less likely to crack/disband due to subfloor movement or impact from dropped goods.

Did you know cross contamination is one of the most common causes of food poisoning? Altro Stronghold K30 has Altro Easyclean technology, making it straightforward to clean and maintain. Altro were the first manufacturer to incorporate Altro Easyclean technology into our safety flooring for enhanced cleanability and appearance retention.

Coved junctions between wall sheets and flooring creates an impermeable seal, which is easier to keep clean. Our fully integrated system is watertight and fully sealed around fixtures and fittings, with the sort of detailing that bacteria and micro-organisms just hate!

Altro Whiterock PVC wall sheets are composed of the highest quality PVC which is impact resistant, grout-free and easy to clean with its stain resistant, wipe-clean surface. A completely sealed and hygienic system, can withstand extremes of hot and cold temperatures. No shedding of loose particles from flooring or wall sheets means no contaminants will fall into the food.

Altro Whiterock is available in a large range of solid and decorative shades that are all HACCP Approved.

HACCP is an international system for food safety management. HACCP requires a risk assessment for every food preparation area identifying "critical points" where food safety hazards could arise. Hazards include: contamination of staff or poorly maintained fittings or equipments, chemical, physical or allergenic risks, caused by ingredients, handling, equipments or fittings, including floors and walls.

The best part about Altro products is that they are all cost effective and recyclable, designed to maintain performance and retain appearance for up to 20 years.
